| Crime Stoppers is a
community-based program that brings the public, the media and the police
together in cooperative effort to help solve crime. This is accomplished by
offering Cash Awards and Guaranteeing Anonymity to persons who
furnish information leading to the arrest of or laying of charges against
criminal offenders. Newfoundland and Labrador Crime Stoppers is a non-profit
organization and is funded entirely by tax deductible donations from the
private and corporate sectors. Crime Stoppers encourages any individual who
has knowledge of a crime to call toll free (1-800-222-TIPS/8477)
and relay their clues or information. They will not be asked to give their
name. Their anonymity is guaranteed and they will not have to testify in
court. If their information provides clues that are vital to the successful
solution of a crime, the tipster could earn up to $2,000 as an award. Crime
Stoppers has proven to be an effective weapon against crime. At present
there are over 700 programs in Canada, the United States and in Europe. In
Canada statistics show that for every dollar paid out, over $50 in property
and drugs is recovered.
Newfoundland and Labrador Crime Stoppers
began in November 1992, and has been quite successful in assisting
investigating agencies solve crime.
