What is
Manitoba Crime Stoppers?
It is a community-based
program that unites the general public, news media, and the police in an
effort to solve crimes that have been committed in Manitoba.
How Does
Crime Stoppers Work?
A volunteer board of
directors representing all parts of rural Manitoba co-ordinate the program
at the provincial level, establish policies and raise funds.
At the local level,
volunteers serve on regional boards and on community committees. They are
involved in publicizing the program, raising funds, and overseeing award
payments at the community level. Volunteers receive no financial
compensation for their efforts.
Who are the
Partners in Manitoba Crime Stoppers?
The Manitoba Chamber of
Commerce was responsible for the establishment of Crime Stoppers in 1985 and
maintains an ongoing interest in the program.
The Royal Canadian Mounted
Police provide a co-ordinator who works closely with the provincial board,
news media and local police.
News media play a key role
for providing publicity as a public service. Television re-enactments,
newspaper articles and radio announcements inform the public of unsolved
crimes and encourage people with knowledge of these incidents to phone the
tip line: 1-800-782-8477.
